Industrial conveyor selection does not begin with a model number. It begins with the item being moved, the path it must follow, the required rate, and what must happen while the item is on the conveyor.

A carton, tote, bag, loose component, drum, and pallet do not interact with a conveyor surface the same way. Product weight matters, but so do footprint, bottom condition, center of gravity, orientation, packaging, and whether the item can tolerate contact with the loads ahead of it.

Slider Bed Belt Conveyors

A moving belt slides over a stationary support bed. Most ACSI models use fabric belting over a metal bed; Model MPB uses a modular plastic belt over a UHMW bed. The continuously supported surface suits small cartons, bags, cases, components, packing, assembly, inspection, sorting, and general transport.

Evaluate when: the product benefits from a stable surface without exposed roller gaps. Trough, trash-handling, modular-plastic, and incline configurations address more specific applications.

Reduced Belt Drag

Belt-Over-Roller Conveyors

The product rides on a continuous belt while carrying rollers support that belt from below. The rollers reduce sliding friction compared with a stationary bed, making this construction a useful starting point when load, conveyor length, speed, or duty increases belt-pull requirements.

Evaluate when: a belt surface is needed for a heavier unit load or longer powered run. ACSI configurations include standard belt, wire-mesh, and inclined roller-bed designs.

Zoned 24VDC Control

Motorized Roller Conveyors (MDR)

Compact 24VDC motor-driven rollers power defined conveyor zones and transfer motion to adjacent carrying rollers. Zones can run only when movement is required, supporting controlled transport, sensing, positioning, release, and zero-pressure accumulation.

Evaluate when: compatible cartons, totes, cases, parcels, or packages need quiet, zone-based movement and flexible control. Product bottoms must receive adequate support from the selected rollers or belted zones.

Common Belt Drive

Belt Driven Live Roller (BDLR)

A belt beneath the conveying surface powers the rollers on which the product rides. ACSI BDLR models provide economical unit-load transport, curves, spurs, minimum-pressure accumulation, and photo-eye or sensor-controlled zero-pressure arrangements.

Evaluate when: stable-bottom cartons, totes, cases, or packaged goods need powered roller transport, routing, branching, or accumulation in light- and medium-duty applications.

Line Shaft Live Roller (LS)

One longitudinal shaft transfers power to individual conveying rollers through urethane O-rings. Straight sections, curves, and spurs can form flexible light- to medium-duty routes, and the 190LSE adds photo-eye controlled zero-pressure accumulation.

Evaluate when: compatible cartons, totes, and cases need modular routing from a common drive arrangement. Product support, total route, line length, curves, and operating environment remain important.

Positive Roller Drive

Chain Driven Live Roller (CDLR)

Chains positively drive the conveying rollers, making CDLR a strong starting point for heavier unit loads, pallets, drums, oily conditions, and applications where more positive roller-to-roller drive is required. ACSI offers straight, curve, spur, and accumulation configurations.

Evaluate when: the load and environment exceed the practical fit of lighter belt-driven or line-shaft systems. Roller centers and load support must match the actual product or pallet bottom.

Gravity Roller and Skatewheel Conveyors

Gravity conveyors move products by slope, manual push, or momentum instead of a powered drive. Skatewheel conveyor is commonly evaluated for lighter cartons and flexible layouts; gravity rollers add support and extend the range from light-duty cartons to heavy industrial loads.

Evaluate when: the process can use manual or gravity flow for picking, packing, shipping, receiving, staging, or storage. Product bottom, roller or wheel spacing, slope, support spacing, and control of speed are essential.

Pallet Handling Conveyors

Pallet systems may use CDLR, drag chain, slat, transfer, turntable, or accumulation equipment. The right carrying method depends on pallet construction, runner orientation, bottom condition, load distribution, direction changes, staging, and required transfers.

Evaluate when: pallets, drums, slip sheets, or heavy unit loads must be transported, accumulated, transferred, indexed, or rotated. ACSI documented families include medium-duty options and designated heavy-duty models rated up to 4,000 pounds.

Elevation Change

Incline and Decline Conveyors

Incline conveyors elevate or lower products using a selected belt surface, transition geometry, and retention method. ACSI families include slider-bed belt, roller-bed belt, and small-parts configurations, with rough-top or cleated belting evaluated when the product and angle require it.

Evaluate when: the product must move between elevations or receive a powered boost. Required rise, available run, product stability, center of gravity, belt friction, cleats, guards, speed, and infeed or discharge transitions all matter.

Flow Requirement

Accumulation Conveyors

Accumulation is a flow function available across multiple drive families rather than one carrying-surface type. It lets products queue before packing, inspection, merges, workstations, machines, or downstream processes.

Zero pressure separates loads in controlled zones to avoid product-to-product pressure. Minimum pressure permits light, controlled contact and can be economical for sturdy, consistently shaped cartons or cases.

What Can Industrial Conveyors Move?

The product category narrows the field, but its actual dimensions, base, load, and process determine the final equipment.

Cartons, Cases and Parcels

Stable-bottom unit loads can fit powered roller, MDR, line shaft, BDLR, gravity roller, slider bed, or belt-over-roller equipment. Choose based on footprint, weight, roller support, routing, rate, and accumulation.

Totes and Containers

Rigid containers often work on roller surfaces when their bottoms bridge the selected roller centers. Belted zones or continuous belts can support products whose bases are less compatible with exposed rollers.

Bags, Small Parts and Components

A continuous slider-bed belt, trough belt, modular plastic belt, or dedicated small-parts incline can provide support and containment that an open roller surface may not.

Pallets, Drums and Heavy Units

CDLR, drag chain, slat, pallet accumulation, transfers, and turntables address heavy loads. Pallet runners, orientation, bottom condition, weight distribution, and transfer geometry must be verified.

Waste, Scrap and Irregular Material

Guarded slider-bed trash conveyors and application-specific belt surfaces can be evaluated for compatible waste or light scrap. Material shape, temperature, sharp edges, debris, and containment require review.

Products Between Elevations

Incline selection depends on product stability, center of gravity, rise, available run, angle, belt friction, cleat spacing, side guards, transitions, and the connection to adjacent equipment.

Important: A product type alone does not establish conveyor compatibility or capacity. Published model capacities, total live load, conveyor length, speed, supports, controls, and operating conditions must be reviewed together.
